Six countries -- Germany, the Netherlands, Latvia, Sweden, Switzerland and Great Britain -- vied for the title in the 680-kilogram weight class Saturday at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU)-affiliated Guo Guang School.
Germany and Latvia bowed out during qualification bouts, leaving the other four countries battling for three medals.
Great Britain defeated Sweden 3-0 for the bronze, and the Netherlands swept Switzerland 3-0 for the gold.
The tug of war is a competitive match of strength between two teams that dates back to 500 B.C. It was once considered as an ideal workout method for many other sports.
Nowadays, this sport of almost unequaled simplicity is staged both indoors and outdoors. In the World Games, the males compete outdoors while the women stay inside. Men's teams have a weight limit of 680 kg. for the eight team members, while women face a limit of 520 kg.
The teams are captained by the lead person -- the first in line -- and the anchor -- the last -- who may wrap the rope around his/her body once.
The highlight of outdoor tug of war is the clash of sheer power between the two teams. Athletes seek an optimal foothold in the ground by digging in their heels and, using that as their pivot, pull the rope with all the strength they are capable of mustering.
