Taiwan tug of war team wins gold medal in world championship (24 februari 2008) Taipei, Feb. 24 (CNA) The Taiwanese women's tug of war team won the title in the senior 520-kg division in the World Indoor Championships 2008 held in Italy Saturday, Chinese Taipei Tug of War Association officials said Sunday. The team, made up mainly of athletes from the Taipei Physical Education College, beat semi-finalist China in two straight games to win gold in the senior 520 women division held in Faenza, the officials said. The team, which won world championships in competitions held in Ireland in 2006 and Germany in 2005, was expected to continue its powerful performance to win another champion in the senior 480 women category Sunday, the officials went on. Saturday's win also gave the team a ticket to take part in competitions in the World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung, the officials added. All six winning teams in the senior 520 women category in the World Indoor Championships will be eligible to compete in the 2009 World Games, they noted. The five other teams are China, Japan, England, Scotland and Ukraine, in that order. (By Deborah Kuo)
