Italian job earns tuggers a medal
(6 maart 2008)

MOORLANDS teams showed their pulling power in the World Indoor Tug of War Championships in Faenza, Italy.

Norton represented England in the men's 560 kilos event, while Sheen Ladies flew the flag in the ladies 520 kilos weight class.

Sheen also competed in the World Open Club Championships at 520 kilos.

In the ladies 520 kilos world open club event, Sheen had a shaky start, but gained in confidence as the competition went on, and managed to reach the semi-finals before losing 2-0 on ends to Lai Gang ladies from China.

The Moorlands team went into the bronze medal pull-off against TTV De Groene Oase and attacked the Dutch team hard on both ends.

Sheen proved too strong for the girls from Holland, and they secured the bronze medal with a good win by 2-0.

Lai Gang won the first ever gold medal for China, defeating the Japanese ladies in the final.

The closed event started with the men's 560 kilos in which Norton represented England for the first time since 2002.

England began by losing 2-0 to 2006 silver medallists and generally looked out of sorts, finally losing out on a semi-final spot when they were beaten by Switzerland.

The gold medal was eventually won by Northern Ireland, with Scotland winning silver and Ireland the bronze.

The ladies 520 kilos event saw England being represented by Sheen Ladies, who started off by defeating the Netherlands, Ukraine and South.

They then lost out to Japan, Chinese Taipei and China, but

still looked good to qualify for the semi-finals.

England's last pull in the group round was against Scotland, who were on level points, and they claimed a hard-fought win to book their place in the last four - as well as the right to represent Great Britain at the World Games in 2009.

England met Chinese Taipei in the semi-final and were defeated by this very good ladies team 2-0.

And they lost out on a bronze medal as their Japanese opponents gained the better momentum on both ends

Chinese Taipei secured the gold medal against China 2-0 to defend their 2006 world title.
