Tug-O-War: Lakehill men win Gold for Ireland
(3 oktober 2007)

RAY Brogan and the Lakehill Tug-OWar team took to the road for the final trip of the season to Minehead, England, where the European Championships recently took place. The open club competitions were held on the Thursday and Friday while the closed international competition took place on the Saturday and Sunday.

The Knockmore club entered the 680kg event on the opening day but were unlucky to be drawn in the same group as eventual silver medalists Bosley from England and top Swedish side Wallby. The lads performed well finishing in third position and just missing out on qualification to the knockout stages.

Lakehill entered the 640kg competition on the Friday and had a bad start when losing to a strong Belgium team in the first pull. The lads performed excellently in the remaining contests, taking maximum points and winning qualification to the knockout stages.

In an unfortunate draw the Mayo team came up against Boley from Wexford and after an excellent contest the Wexford men emerged victorious and went on to win the bronze medal.

On the Saturday and Sunday various Tug-O-War members of the Lakehill squad were chosen to represent their country in the international competitions. The final competition of the championship was the eagerly awaited closed 640kg. Lakehill club members Gerard Ferguson from Sligo and Paul Rowland from Ballycroy, along with six members of the Boley team, were chosen to represent Ireland.

Twelve countries took part in the competition which was run in two groups of six. The Irish team qualified for the semi-final in second place behind England. Switzerland and reigning world champions Germany qualified from the second group. Ireland overcame Switzerland in a three end thriller to qualify for their third 640kg final in as many years.

In the final, Ireland faced England who had overcome the Germans in the second semi-final. Having fallen at the final hurdle in the previous two years the Irish team pulled their way to gold in an electric atmosphere at the Butlin’s stadium. It was an amazing achievement for the Irish team and a moment to remember for all the Irish in attendance.

On the Monday morning the Lakehill team returned home following a very successful season at both national and international level and all at the club can look forward to the 2008 season and building on this year’s success.
