Pulling out the stops at championships
(3 oktober 2007)

HANGING Bridge Tug of War Team and Sheen Ladies rounded off a good season with a respectable showing in the European Championship.

The event took place at Minehead Football Ground in Somerset, and the two Ashbourne clubs contributed to some unprecedented success for the English teams.

Mayfield's Hanging Bridge competed in the European Club Championships, at 560 kilos and 640 kilos. They had a relatively good season, reaching finals at the UK championships, and winning bronze in the Tug of War Association National League.

They were unfortunate not to progress past the group stages in the 560 kilos category, where they were tied on points with three other teams behind Fam Janssens from Belgium, who finished top of the group. Hanging Bridge were eliminated for receiving more cautions than any of the other team.

In the 640 kilos event Hanging Brindge lost one end too many in the group stages, and again missed out on progressing to the knock-out stages.

Hanging Bridge's youngest member, Dave Sowter, was a member of the England under 23 squad that was competing in the 600 kilos championships.

The team had a tough start against defending champions Germany, which ended as a 1-1 draw. But they team continued to improve through the competition, and reached the semi finals along with the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland.

England met the Dutch, who proved to be too strong, with England losing by two ends to none. Therefore they went into the bronze medal pull off against Switzerland.

Switzerland took the first end but England battled back to take the second. England won the toss, and elected to pull on the good end. Both teams battled again, and both teams ended up on two cautions. Unfortunately for England, they received a final caution, and the pull was awarded to Switzerland after it looked like England were about to gain an advantage. The Netherlands took the gold medal, with Sweden taking the silver.

In the closed international competition local ladies team, Sheen Ladies, who have members from the Ashbourne area, were representing England.

Sheen Ladies took part in the 560 kilos event and they were looking to improve on their performance at the 2006 World Championships.

England managed to reach the semi-finals in this weight category, where they met Switzerland. The Swiss team proved to be too strong in the semi final, and England were beaten 2-0.

England went through to the bronze medal play-off, where they met former world champions the Netherlands. England were 20 kilos light in this weight category but the team battled hard.

Unfortunately, for the English team, it was the Netherlands who put in the better performance to secure the bronze medal.
