Sheen ladies so unlucky
|
(3 oktober 2007)
SHEEN Ladies were unlucky to come away from the European Outdoor Tug of War Championships at Minehead without a medal.
The team had to be content with fourth place after losing to former world champions the Netherlands in the pull-off for 560 kilos bronze.
Sheen, who had to lost to eventual beaten finalists Switzerland at the semi-final stage, went into their clash with the Netherlands weighing 20 kilos light. But despite being at a distinct weight disadvantage they battled well.
The Sheen ladies will be wanting to quickly put their disappointment behind them as they prepare for the national indoor championships in Birmingham on December 1. At stake is the honour of representing England at the world indoor championships in Italy next February.
Congleton struck gold for England in the men's 720 kilos event and Bosley collected bronze at 680 kilos.
The Bosley men also gained silver at 680 kilos in the European Club Championships which were staged alongside the world championships.
The four-day event, which was staged at the Minehead football ground, was honoured with a visit from The Princess Royal.
Lynsey Chipperfield and Dawn Wainright from Sheen, and Robin Smith and Alan Knott, from Leek, who pull for Congleton, were amongst the delegation introduced to Princess Anne.
"There were some fantastic results for the England teams over the weekend," commented Alan Knott , who is also a representative of the England Tug of War Association.
"All of our England teams finished in the top four places in each weight category at the championships, coming away with two gold medals, one silver medal, one bronze medal, and three fourth place finishes.
"This represents one of the best European Championships in terms of results for a long time for the England teams, and it was pleasing to get these results on home soil.
"It was pleasing to see so many local teams and competitors help England achieve such success, and we hope that this will continue in the near future"
Local teams will soon begin training for the indoor tug of war season, which starts on October 14. All local teams continually seek new members, and you can contact your local team by visiting the Tug of War Association web site at www.tugofwar.co.uk.
