Boley heave their way to European victory (3 oktober 2007) MEMBERS OF the Boley tug-o-war team returned home to Ballycullane as European Champions on Monday evening after beating England in the European Championships on Sunday in Minehead, England. The competitions, which commenced on Thursday, saw the Boley boys winning two gold medals and one bronze medal in the tough competitions. Sean Roberts, James Kehoe, Laurence Kehoe, Ollie Kehoe, Shay Ryan and Joe Kehoe were the six Boley men who represented Ireland in the 640 European Championships. They were joined in the Championships by their coach, Bill Kehoe. Ireland were drawn with England, Sweden, Latvia, Italy and Belgium in the 640 and the first match was between Ireland and Sweden. Sweden went from the start taking rope and on hard ground it was hard to stop them but we were unlucky not to have beaten them in the first pull,' said coach Bill Kehoe. The second event went far better for Ireland, who won the pull and from there the next couple of matches went their way and when the crunch pull came against England it evened the score to one all. Ireland were drawn against Switzerland, the clean and easy winners of Group One, who won the first pull against Ireland after the Boley men spent over seven minutes of very hard pulling. At this stage we brought on out own sub Dermot Kehoe and we managed to turn the tables on the Swiss winning the next two pulls,' said Bill. In the final Ireland beat England in two hard pulls to emerge the European Champions after a gap of twelve years. The Boley Team also competed on Thursday and Friday in the Open Club Championships in the 680kgs against 32 other teams from 17 nations. The Boley club won this category impressively by not loosing one single pull and saw them bringing home their first 680kgs medal in 14 years, which incidentally they won in 1993 on the same ground.
