2007 GENSB Youth International Tournament
GENSB Tournament - A report by Peter Tuckwell

The 10th GENSB youth tournament was held on 25th August at Retie in Belgium. Retie is about 50km to the east of Antwerp and is home of Fam. Janssens TOWC, who hosted the event with the Belgian Tug of War Association.

The first round of the competitionswas the group stage, which was held on six ropes with one group per rope. The winners and runners up of each group, plus the four best third place teams progressed to the knockout stage.

49 teams, including 5 from England, entered this years competition. Three of the English teams came from Leicester, Northants and Rutland (LNR) army cadets and the other two from 4 group (London) ACF. The English teams performed well, bu none managed to progress beyond the points stage. It is fair to point out that tug of war is just one of the activities that the ACF members take part in, whereas most of the other teams are junior sections of established tug of war clubs. It is the first time that the London ACF clubs have entered GENSB, and they gained some good experience as well as helping to keep England's interest in the tournament alive.

The semi-finals were TTV Lagerweij (Netherlands) versus Sins (Switzerland), and Neckarbergstrasse (Germany) versus Ebersecken (Switzerland), with Lagerweij and Ebersecken winning through to the final. Lagerweij won the gold medal for the second year running. It is the first time in the 10 year history of GENSB that the same club has won the gold medal in 2 consecutive years. The bronze medal was won by Sins.

Judges Peter Tuckwell and Vic Ludkin, and Timekeeper Yvonne Ludkin were the English officials. The 2007 GENSB competition lived up to all expectations and the organisers are to be congratualted for staging a well run event, which included the accomodation and catering for all the participants. We all look forward to meeting up again next year for the 11th GENSB tournament which is to be held at Reilingen, Baden Wurttemberg in Germany.
