LOCALS PULL THEIR WEIGHT AT EUROPEAN EVENT

Pullers took the strain at the European Outdoor Tug-of-War Championships to come away with gold. Teams from Norton, Congleton and Bosley all represented England at the event along with Sheen Ladies team.Cheddleton's Robin Smith and Leek's Dave and Alan Knott are members of the Congleton team, while Sheen's Andrew Hall, Ian Hulme and John Etches assisted the Bosley team at the championships last week. Leek's Steve Prime and Andy Barnes, of Brown Edge, were involved with the Norton team, who train at the Hollybush Inn, at Denford. Smith was part of the Congleton team which represented England in the 720 kilos event, where they won gold.

After beating Germany 2-0 in the semi-finals, Smith helped England beat Switzerland to secure European Gold.
Norton, Congleton and Bosley competed in the European Club Championships, with Norton reaching the quarter-finals of the open 640 kilo event where they were beaten by eventual bronze medallists Boley, from the Republic of Ireland.
Bosley faced Boley in the final of the 680k event where the Irishmen came away with gold.
In the closed international competition, Sheen Ladies, Congleton and Bosley represented England.
The ladies reached the semi-finals of the 560k event to meet Switzerland, who beat them 2-0.
The gold medal was won by Sweden, while Switzerland took silver. In the 680k, it was Bosley made it through to the semi-finals along with Switzerland, Netherlands and Germany. England faced Switzerland in the semis and the Netherlands were up against Germany.
England won the first end, but lost the other two and went into the bronze medal match against Germany where they won the medal. The Netherlands won gold and Switzerland silver. "There were some fantastic results for the England teams," said Alan Knott. "All of our England teams finished in the top four places in each weight category at the championships, coming away with gold medals, one silver, one bronze and three fourth-place finishes.
"It was pleasing to see so many local teams and competitors help England achieve such success and we hope this will continue in the near future."
The championships were visited by the Princess Royal, and pullers from local teams, including Lynsey Chipperfield and Dawn Wainright, from Sheen, and Robin Smith and Alan Knott, from the Congleton team, were among the delegation introduced to Princess Anne.
All of the local teams are continually on the look out new members.
