Tug of war team strikes European gold (26 september 2007) By Ian Ross CONGLETON Tug of War team struck gold at the European Outdoor Championships at Minehead in Somerset. The team was representing England in the 720 kilos event, and started strongly by beating Ireland and the Nthertlands. The side proved too strong for Germany in the semi-final, running out 2-0 winners. advertisementThey faced current world champions Switzerland in the final, and produced another powerful display to storm to victory and secure European gold. The championships were visited by the Princess Royal, and Congleton pullers Robin Smith, Dave Bowyer and Alan Knott were among the delegation introduced to Princess Anne. "We were so pleased with our performance," said Alan. "We proved many of our critics wrong on the day, and it is a very satisfying feeling to win a European gold medal in an England shirt on home soil."
