English Tug Of War Association (Comments on World Open Clubs Championships)

Day 1
The day started with the Men’s 560 kilos. This competition was split into two groups, with English interest coming in the form of Team Army, and also the A and B teams from Kilroe. Group 1 was won by Kilroe, with Mountain View from the Republic of Ireland coming in second place to make it through to the cross over. Group 2 was won by St Pats from the republic of Ireland, with Richill from Northern Ireland following behind in second place to reach the cross over.
Kilroe were declared the eventual winners after Richill, Mountain View and St Pats all withdrew from the competition.
The ladies 560 kilos was the next weigh category. There were no English teams competing in this weigh category. The cross over resulted in Taipei, the ladies team from Japan, TTV Green Oase from Holland and Ayrshire from Scotland reaching the semi-finals. TTV Green Oase defeated Ayrshire in the first semi final, and Taipei beat the Japanese team. The Japanese team then defeated Ayrshire for the bronze medal. The Taipei team then won a convincing final, to prove what a great team they are, to follow on from a strong and professional performance at the World Games in Germany, where they were also gold medallists.
The final weight of the day was the Men’s 640 kilos. This competition was split into 4 groups, with the top two teams from each group going through to the semi finals. The English interest in this competition came in the form of Raunds, Sheen, Hedge End, BAC and Team Army. All of the teams gave a good account of themselves, but the only team to make it through to the knockout stages were Sheen. Sheen reached the Semi finals, along with TTV Lagerwej from Holland, BRC from Scotland, TTV Heidenskip from Holland, Stans Oberdorf from Switzerland, Mountain View from Ireland, St Pats from Ireland and Ayrshire from Scotland. In the Quarter finals, Sheen defeated Ayrshire, BRC defeated Mountain View, Stans Oberdorf defeated TTV Heidenskip, and St Pats defeated TTV Lagerwej.
The semi finals paired Sheen and BRC together, and St Pats met Stans Oberdorf. Sheen defeated BRC by two good ends to none, after they proved to be a little too strong for the Scottish side, and they went on to the final to meet St Pats who defeated Stans Oberdorf. BRC won the bronze medal after comfortably defeating Stans Oberdorf by 2 ends to 0. The final was a good tough pull for both Sheen from England and St Pats from the Republic of Ireland. The first end was very close. Sheen pumped St Pats Back, then St Pats did the same. Both teams were on two cautions and Sheen were going back with St Pats, only for St Pats to dump Sheen on the floor, which resulted in the judge giving the end to St Pats. On the second end, Sheen were going back with St Pats, only to stop and St Pats took them all the way back to take the gold medal.
Day 2
The day started with the men’s 600 kilos. English interest came in the form of Team Army, Hedge End and Sandhurst. Sandhurst came closest to reaching the semi-finals, but missed out after finishing third in their group, after losing a couple of ends early on. The winners of Sandhurst’s group were St Pats from Ireland with Lagerwej from Holland going through in second place. The winners of the other group were Mountain View from Ireland who finished ahead of Clonmany in second place. The cross over saw St Pats defeat Clonmany, and Mountain View defeat Lagerwej. Clonmany defeated Lagerwej for the bronze, and St Pats took a well deserved gold medal in the final against Mountain view.
The ladies 480 then took place. The cross over resulted in Ayrshire from Scotland defeating Tai Gang from China to make it to the final, and Osaka from Japan defeated Dj’s from the USA to reach the final. The bronze pull off saw a good competitive pull take place between DJ’s and Tai Gang. DJ’s took a close first end, when the Chinese team took them close to the line, but DJ’s kept battling and eventually won through after the Chinese received three cautions. The next two ends saw the Chinese raise their game, and managed to keep up on their legs to take the bronze medal, and a first tug of war medal for a team from China. The final saw Osaka against Ayrshire, and Osaka proved to be too strong in the end and won the gold medal 2-0.
The final weight of the Open Clubs championships was the men’s 680 kilos competition. English interest came in the shape of Raunds, Hedge End, BAC and Team Army. Raunds came through their group ahead of St Pats from Ireland. Group 2 saw TTV IT Heidenskip from Holland go through in first place, with Ayrshire from Scotland coming through in second place. The semi finals saw Raunds defeat Ayrshire, whilst St Pats defeated Heidenskip in the second semi final. The bronze pull off saw Heidenskip up against Ayrshire from Scotland. Heidenskip defeated Ayrshire in the group and looked strong, but faded in the bronze medal pull off and a good bronze medal was won by the team from Scotland by 2 ends to 0. In the final Raunds pulled really well against St Pats. Raunds were taking St Pats back on the first end, only to get blown out for receiving three cautions. On the second end St Pats had too much for Raunds and took their third gold of the open competition.
