English TOW first Day World Championships
English Tug Of War Association (Comments on first Day World Championships)

England gained 1 gold medal and two silver medals in the first day of the international championships after some fantastic performances by the England Team.

The day started with the men’s 560 kilos competition. Defending Champions England were up against tough opposition from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as good sides from China, Switzerland and Italy. Some good pulling in the group stages saw Northern Ireland defeat the Republic of Ireland. England won all of their pulls in the group before they met the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in their final two pulls of the group. Both pulls were gruelling pulls for the England Team and they managed to win then both by 2 ends to 0. The semi finals saw England up against the republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland against Switzerland. England defeated Ireland in a tight pull, and Northern Ireland defeated Switzerland. The bronze pull off saw Ireland defeat Switzerland by 2 ends to 0.

The first final of the international championships turned out to be an absolute cracker, with the first end going very close indeed. England worked against Northern Ireland taking them three quarters of the way, then Northern Ireland got back into the pull. A close battle ensued and both teams ended up on two cautions. The judge then blew the pull back to the middle for a restart after both teams received their third warning. The re-pull went exactly the same, but this time England just did enough and Northern Ireland received their third caution and the first end was awarded to England. On the second end, England made a substitution and worked Northern Ireland back again. It was a good tight end and Northern Ireland made England drag them all the way, especially on for a very nerve wracking last two foot, before England pulled it over the line, which resulted in history being made for the representative Kilroe team, winning their 5th consecutive world title At 560 kilos, and a 6th consecutive 560 world title for England.

Next up was the ladies 520 kilos. England were represented by Sheen ladies, and they were looking to improve the result, which they got in Germany at the world games in July. England started off, with what looked on paper to be a difficult pull against Japan, who reached the world games final in July. England, however got off to a fantastic start to defeat Japan 2-0 and went through the rest of their pulls, defeating China, USA, Netherlands and only lost two ends against the world games winners Chinese Taipei. The semi finals drew England against the Netherlands and Chinese Taipei against Japan. England pulled with power in their semi-final against the Netherlands, and the Netherlands had no answer to them over both ends, and England reached a well deserved final to meet Chinese Taipei, who defeated Japan.

In the bronze pull off Japan defeated the Netherlands to secure the bronze medal by two ends to none. The final saw England reach their first indoor ladies final since 1997, where England won the gold, represented by Leek. In the final England pushed from the drop and took Chinese Taipei a third of the way, only for Chinese Taipei to work England back to take the first end. The second end was a similar story, which resulted in the gold going to Chinese Taipei, but silver was a great achievement for the England team, and certainly well deserved.

The final weight of the day was the 640 kilos, with England being represented by Sheen. The 640 kilos was pulled as a straight group. England started with a win against the Republic of Ireland, and then hit a bit of a sticky patch, losing an end to Switzerland, but then started to recover, only losing to Scotland. England finished in joint second in the group with the Republic of Ireland, with Scotland topping the group, and Netherlands reaching the semi finals in 4th place. In the semi-finals, England defeated the Netherlands, and Scotland defeated the republic of Ireland.

The bronze pull off resulted in Ireland defeating Holland to secure their second bronze of the day. In the final, it was a repeat of the 2004 final between England and Scotland. The first end saw England attack from the drop, but a resilient Scotland team held on and worked England back to take the first end. The second end saw England attack again, and this time they took a little more off Scotland, but as in the first end, Scotland hung on and worked England back to secure gold and retain their world title, but it was a good silver for England and capped off a good day, where all of the England teams reached the final of their respective weight categories.
